Libya has increased production from an onshore oil field, as it further enhances its technical abilities in the oil and gas sector.
At the end of June, the NOC announced that the AA-10 oil well at the onshore Fareeg field had reached an output of 1,600 bpd, up from 250 bpd, with the potential to increase output further once the well works are completed.
This latest announcement follows the NOC’s statement earlier in June outlining its strategic plans to increase oil production from 1.5 million bpd by the end of 2025, and 2 million bpd by 2027.
The NOC aims to do so through the development of new wells and the maintenance of existing infrastructure. It also intends to deploy enhanced oil recovery techniques to increase its oil production.
Significant progress on this strategy was made at the end of June.
The Waha Oil Company has announced that it had agreed a strategic partnership with the global oil services giant, SLB, formerly known as Schlumberger.
Notably, the partnership has already yielded significant results at the Al-Dafa field, with the successful drilling of horizontal wells using advanced drilling techniques.
Waha Oil noted that Schlumberger is currently conducting advanced reservoir studies on the oasis fields, some of which are the first of their kind in Libya and the region.
Simulation studies in the North Jallo field are expected to contribute around 100,000 bpd to production in the coming years, the company added.
Specialised training is also being provided to Libyan engineers using advanced techniques and software.
Oil production is Libya’s ‘primary source of income’ and accounts for about 90% of the country’s economic activity, according to the NOC. Libya is currently Africa’s top oil producing country according to data published by OPEC earlier in the year.
“These latest developments bode well for Libya’s plans for increasing oil and gas production,” noted Tarek Eltumi of Eltumi Partners. “As a firm, our global and regional expertise in these sectors means that we can provide companies with both commercial and legal advice.”
